Chronicles Of An Online Poker Player – Part Three

Chronicles Of An Online Poker Player – Part Three

Author: J. Scott Miller

“Where does all of the money go”

I have been playing poker online for years.  I have played in casinos as well, but still enjoy playing poker online.  If you are like me (And I hope you’re not), have you ever wondered, in the end, where does all of the money go?

Yes, I know what you are thinking; “It goes to the great poker players.”  Sometimes, maybe, but in the end, it pays off handsomely to be the owner/operator of an online sports book/casino/poker room.  But it also pays off to know what you are doing while playing play real money poker!  Learn the game before losing your money to the good players.

I have “cashed out” several times, and it really does feel good, doesn’t it?  I hope your answer was “yes.”  If your answer was, “I have never cashed out any money,” then keep reading my articles and you will learn how to win (mostly from the mistakes I have made in the past!).  I can joke about it, but if you want to know where the money goes, and you have never cashed out, the online owners get what is called a “rake.”

A “rake” from the play real money poker room is usually 5% per completely played hand.  I just logged off of Intertops (where I play) and saw that I played in their 2.5 billionth hand!  Yes, that is 2,500,000,000 hands so far.  If you want to do the math, and I choose not to, that is a lot of raked hands, equaling a lot of cash for the operator.  But does all of the money go to the online operator?  In the end, most of it does, but that depends on your skill level and your wallet size.

Remember the old saying; “The cream always rises to the top?”  You should log onto a poker room sometime and peek into a room that is playing 0/0 blinds, with no limit.  You had better know what you’re doing in those rooms! These are the players who at times, when things get slow, will go down to the smaller stake rooms and make some money off of the “bottom feeders.”  That is why you need to need to learn how to play.  Make every cent count when making and calling your bets.  Yes, a bluff every now and then is okay, but playing smart does not mean playing “safe.”  Recognizing a superior player can be hard to do.  Another old saying to refer to; “If you look around the table looking for the sucker, it is most likely you!”  Yes, just call me the “Lolly Pop Kid.”

There are many books and online articles to read to either brush up on your skills, or begin learning the game all together.  You can play in the “free” games offered in many sites, but really what is that for?  It is a “chat site” for people looking for a conversation.  Do you think you’ll be saying, “Oh boy, he just went all-in with his fake money, what should I do?”  Who cares about the free poker rooms?  Learn the game!

So if the cream does rise to the top, why can’t you go up there with it?  Read a book, play the cheap rooms for a while, and when you are ready to take the leap, move up a level or two.  That leads me to the next article I’ll be writing about, “No-Limit Poker versus Limit Poker.”  There is a huge difference in how to play and what to be aware of while playing these games.  See you at the tables.

Online Poker

Online Poker

Online poker has all the advantages of online gaming. It can be played comfortably from home, without the need for formal dressing up. It is inexpensive, requiring only a computer and an Internet connection. It offers total anonymity, with your real identity being hidden by your online one.

But online poker also offers several other advantages that allow novice poker players to take up the game. Novice players find it difficult to hide their emotions. In online poker the proverbial poker face has become a non-issue because other players cannot see you. Therefore you can whoopee if you draw a full house or curse aloud if your highest card is a ten and no one will be the wiser. Also no one can catch your poker tells. So if you have the tendency to scratch your ears when you are bluffing go ahead and do so. Also you do not have to worry about deprecating looks from poker professionals if your bluff has been caught or you have wagered unwisely.

Cost wise online poker is a cheaper proposition than table poker. Since the poker casino is not involved in the play there is no house edge involved in the game. Therefore poker tables make their money through the rake, which is a percent of the pot. Online poker has lower establishment costs. There is no real infrastructure to maintain ? no expensive décor, no plush poker tables and no liveried staff. Hence online poker casinos can make do with a lower rake. Also the number of players is much more and so is the turnover. Therefore again a smaller rake enables the fixed costs to be met. A lower rake is of immense benefit to poker players because it directly translates to larger winnings.

Online poker rooms have a wide range of clientele and they have learnt to cater to them all. Special attention is paid to novice players because in time they develop into regular clients and become the mainstay of the poker casino. There are separate low stake tables for novice players to ensure that they are not milked by the poker professionals. There are a wide variety of teaching aids available on poker casinos. These include explanation of poker rules and poker strategies, interactive tutorials and demonstration games, glossary of terms pokerss and tips from in-house professionals.

Finally poker rooms are fun places. There is lot of live chat and interaction through bulletin boards. Poker casinos offer plenty of bonuses that go to extend your bankroll. If you ever wanted to play online real money pokers but were afraid to go to a brick and mortar casino then the online poker room is the place for you.

Back to the Future: Online Poker I

Back to the Future: Online Poker I

So how did poker go from back alley to your laptop? Let’s look at the first interesting fact of our two-part series about play online poker.

How many times did we wonder how life was going to be after the year 2000? Well, some of us spent quite some time wondering and dreaming about it; it even lead to the creation of cartoon entertainment shows like “The Jetsons,” sci-fi movies and shows that would show a completely different planet than the one we had back then: vehicles flying at light speed, people replacing food with tablets or strange-looking shakes, people being born from womb-like machine eggs, etc.

Who would have thought that sites such as Party Poker were going to be the future of traditional table poker? Nobody ever thought that calling, folding or raising money to a real money poker was going to be a click away, that poker players from all around the world were going to be able to meet for a tournament from their own homes, wearing their pajamas, and that they were going to be represented in a screen by their own nickname in an ‘almost real’-looking poker room with chairs, tables, dealers, animation and everything! To think about how many books were written in the 20th century about visual strategy and reading your opponents when now people have eliminated that aspect from poker while playing at a virtual setting makes you wonder: is play online poker going to replace poker completely in the future?

Online poker originated from IRC poker, a form of poker played over the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) in the 90’s. Internet Relay Chat, a form of internet chat or synchronized conferencing, was a program developed by Finnish software developer Jarkko Oikarinen, who, while working for the University of Oulu in 1988, created the first IRC server and client programs, in an effort to replace the MUT (MultiUser Talk) program used then by the Finnish BBS Oulubox. Inspiring on a chat system called Bitnet Relay (chat service running on a special id on several suitable hosts in the Bitnet) which operated on the BITNET, a network that preceded the internet, created in 1981 as a cooperative university network in which e-mail messages and files would travel from one server to another. According to NetHistory, BITNET originally stood for “Because It’s There Network,” and with time, it adopted the name “Because It’s Time Network,” becoming so popular among universities that it extended to almost 500 organizations and 3,000 nodes. All colleges and educational institutions could join BITNET by meeting the following requirements: “a. lease a data circuit (phone line) from [their] site to an existing BITNET node; b. buy modems for each end of the data circuit, sending one to the connecting point site; c. allow other institutions to connect to [their] site.”

Therefore, Oikarinen used the Bitnet Relay resources available at them moment to create the IRC, which gained its place in the telecommunication world when it was used by military institutions for communicating when media blackouts occurred. After this, IRC became a popular tool for remote and fast communication, and it wasn’t long until it started being used for games, including poker.

IRC poker used a program to deal and manage real money pokers, and one-line commands had to be typed directly with a standard IRC client, receiving one-line responses from the dealer program, which made games flow faster than face-to-face games. Soon, graphical IRC clients were developed, eliminating the typing feature. IRC poker used imaginary money, which was appealing to beginners who wanted to learn their skills without risking their bankroll. This primitive virtual poker helped personalities like Chris Ferguson build their poker edge until they felt strong enough to play for real.

In the late 1990’s, Mike Caro, already a poker writer, computer programmer and visionary, co-founded Planet Poker, a virtual casino which offered real money real money pokers for the first time in virtual gaming history. He had the vision that virtual real money pokers were going to prosper in the gaming community since the mid 80’s; according to Al Moe in his article Legends of Poker: Mike Caro. Moe reports: “His own artificially intelligent poker-playing computer, ORAC (Caro backwards), made it to national TV where it played Bob Stupak in a 0,000 challenge match. Bob put up his own money, and Caro’s friend, casino owner Jackie Gaughn, backed the computer. ABC’s ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not’ filmed the match, which Stupak eventually won.”

According to Planet Poker, the first years of play online poker were not easy. Even though they knew that virtual poker had certain advantages over table poker, such as eliminating real table distractions and the stress of keeping a cool and mysterious poker face, there were immediate challenges to play online poker: bluffing or calling bluffs would not exist in virtual poker, since that is an exclusive feature of face-to-face poker, and marketing virtual gaming, which had to do with the fact that the internet and computer use was still establishing as a new communication trend in the world, thus making it difficult for the virtual casino to have as big a clientele as brick and mortar casinos. However, they started brainstorming on virtual poker publicity, and they focused on the advantages over face-to-face poker: “first, they ran some clever quarter page ads in Card Player and elsewhere, extolling the virtues of play online poker. Play in your pajamas, play at 2 a.m., play even if you can’t make the regular game, the ads said. The pitch was a good one, and the players began to arrive. ‘We were all skeptical at first. But the proof was all around us. Poker was actually being played remotely.’ Before long, hundreds of players at a time were playing play online poker in Planet Poker’s virtual cardroom, and the Internet poker revolution had begun in earnest.” The issue of trusting a virtual casino was quickly resolved by keeping an impeccable reputation with customers: “Poker hands were examined, cheats were barred from the play online real money poker, and players were reimbursed for legitimate grievances. Like any cardroom, virtual ones gained their players’ trust through fair and honest dealing.”

After Poker Planet’s big virtual step, the rest is history. Creativity boosted competition between emerging virtual casinos, and an array of marketing promotions and incentives can now be found all over the internet, with established sites such as Party Poker maintaining as big a clientele as real casinos do.

Next week’s topic will be “Chapter Two: The best poker school,” which will offer some examples of why play online poker has been the best school for poker players.

Chronicles Of An Online Poker Player – Part Four

Chronicles Of An Online Poker Player – Part Four

Author: J. Scott Miller

“Playing Limit or No-Limit”

Okay, so what will it be, limit poker, or no-limit poker? You better know the difference before you begin playing. By saying this, I mean by the types of players who play in these rooms. I will either choose 25/50 cent no-limit or / limit.

I have said in the past that I will sometimes buy in for in a 10/20 cent no-limit room. But doing so without having a bankroll to continue on, should you lose an all-in bet, says you’re only in it for the short term. That will say a lot about you and the way you play. I will constantly see people buy in for , go all-in, but no one will call. Then that same person goes all-in again, and no one calls. But it will happen. Someone will eventually call him and he will lose. “Bloop!” There is another buy in from that player. He continues on until he has had enough and will disappear.

Please, don’t get this person confused with the “Bully” that I spoke about in my first article. This guy is simply in it for the short term, as am I when I buy in for only . Even though would be the maximum I can buy in for, you should have money backed up in your account to “reload” just in case.

This brings up another issue. Good online players will keep notes as to how people play. Believe it or not, this happens. That is what separates me from the good players …uh, you know what I mean.

Players in smaller limit rooms will definitely have more chasers, also known as “fish.” “Fish” are people who chase the deck for cards on 4th street and the river. But “fish” can be found anywhere. So if you are playing in a lower limit game, be careful how you play. By saying “lower limit,” this could be as much as / limit rooms. Be aggressive with the “fish” players so they will drop out of the hand. Even then it may not be enough and you will find you are on the wrong side of a river card flush. I hate people like me!

Now playing no-limit is for true “gamblers.” I don’t even mean card players in general, but simply a person who likes to gamble for the fun of it. This, of course, is really meant for the lower no-limit games. Once you buy in for , or even 0, you better make sure you are not in this “just for the fun of it.” There are plenty of players out there swimming through the internet poker rooms looking for the perfect catch. Don’t get reeled in by one of them.

Have you made your decision yet? You can read all of the different professional poker player’s books, there are plenty of them, (And I recommend it) but these are people who can tell you what cards you have by looking into your eyes. They can’t do this with play real money poker. If you feel like you may be overwhelmed, or under skilled as a player, stay low and learn by your mistakes. Once you have decided what you like most, stick with it. And like I said before, be aggressive. Stay on the gas peddle and go for broke.

Maybe that’s why I am broke? See you at the tables.
