How to Take Advantage of Bad Poker Players

January 31, 2011 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Poker Articles

How to Take Advantage of Bad Poker Players

The increase of poker popularity has led to a flood of fish that are just waiting for you to take their money.  Seriously.  These fish are untalented, undisciplined, and lack the fundamental skills to succeed in Texas Hold’em. These players think that since they have seen a few episodes of the World Poker Tour, they are poker pros.  If you want to make money playing Texas Hold’em, you need to learn to take all the money from these novices before they give it to someone else.

There are many ways that you can bankrupt the bad players at your table. These methods are tested and proven and can give you an advantage over everyone else at the table.  These methods include:

1. Fake Weakness

It seems that everyone over-estimates their own poker ability. Bad players usually think they are one of the best players at any given table.  This false sense of ability will lead bad players to attempt to buy virtually every pot.  This over-aggression makes weak players especially vulnerable to check-raises and slow playing good cards.  When you have the nuts, don`t lead out with a big bet (like you should against a good player), instead slow play the hand and let the novice try to buy the pot.

2. Destroy Their Game Plan

Usually a novice’s plan will depend on his ability to bluff effectively. If you are able to remove a significant section of their stack, you will destroy their game plan and put yourself on the fast track to the chip lead.

3. Show No Respect for Weak Bets

A bad player will fear losing all their chips on a mediocre hand. This means they will often make small bets on the turn and river.  Show zero respect for these bets. Making a large raise over these weak bets will often scare away bad players leaving you with the pot.

4. Face Bad Players “Heads Up”

Since good players and bad players require different strategies, try to force other players out of hand before clashing with a weak player.  Eliminating other players will reduce the amount of possibilities you have to consider. This will allow you to focus more on how to scare away weak players.

5. Always Have a Decent Hand

Even if you play your hand flawlessly, a bad player may call all your bets with nothing but an Ace high.  This is very frustrating, but very common.  In fact, I know many poker professionals who will not play against novices because they are so difficult to bluff.  So, before you enter into a high-cost hand with a bad player, make sure that you have at least a decent hand and you are confident that they don’t have anything better.  These are just a few of the quick, simple ways to take advantage of bad poker players.

High Stakes Poker Player: Daniel Alaei

January 30, 2011 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Poker Articles

High Stakes Poker Player: Daniel Alaei

Daniel Alaei is perhaps best well known for his many appearances on popular television shows which feature cash game action, including the first three seasons of “High Stakes Poker”. Daniel Alaei outlasted 328 other poker players to take down the World Poker Tour (WPT) Doyle Brunson Classic Championship earlier this evening, taking home ,428,430, an entry into the k WPT Championship and a Rolex watch in the process.

Daniel Alaei is a young professional poker player from Santa Fe Sperings, California and presently residews in Las Vegas. He won his first World Series Of Poker (WSOP) bracelet in 2006. Before winning an enormous poker bracelets and taking home countless of pots in a poker tournament. Daniel Alaei was a used sports car dealer, he would travel to shows to buy sports car and resell them.

Although noted for his skills at the cash table, Daniel has quietly but surely amassed over a million in tournament winnings, predominantly aided by his WSOP 2006 bracelet win in the ,000 Deuce to 7-Lowball rebuy event, further acknowledgment of his strength in depth for someone so young.

Although aloof at the felt with a seemingly fixed sunglasses/headphones pairing, Daniel is widely regarded as a pleasant, softly spoken character who never has a bad word to say about anyone – here lies a player who won’t be whooping, hollering or criticizing an opponent’s play, a trait that has garnered him the peer respect he deserves.

With his victory, Daniel Alaei now has about .8 million dollars in total lifetime tournament cashes. Alaei also managed to accomplish the very difficult task of winning both a World Series of Poker bracelet and WPT title in the same year. Daniel Alaei had to battle through a very stacked final table that included the likes of Josh Arieh, Faraz Jaka and Scotty Nguyen.

He came into heads up play with only about half as many chips as Josh Arieh but Daniel Alaei was able to rally, win a big race and go on to take the title at the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic. Josh Arieh had a shot to win the title when he had Danny all in with his AK against the pocket queens of Alaei. The two had raised back and forth preflop until all the chips were in in a classic race situation. Once the betting was done there was over 14 million in the pot and after the queens held up Danny Alaei jumped to the chip lead.

The two battled and Arieh dropped to below 5 million chips before they were all in again. This time Alaei had Arieh dead to rights with his A of spades and Q of diamond dominating the A of clubs and 7 of hearts of Josh Arieh. The 9-9-2-7-8 board paired the live card for Arieh though and he was able to double up to bring the players to almost dead even in chips with 10 million each.

Daniel Alaei made a great comeback after being the short stack at one point and he didn’t hide the fact that it was an especially sweet win for him. “I’ve been wanting one of these for a while. I was basically the only one of my friends that didn’t have one, now I’ve got one and it feels great,” he said to

Texas Hold'em Rules

Texas Hold’em Rules

The basic rules for playing Texas Hold’em Poker are easy to learn. While becoming a great player will take hours of study and play, we have to start somewhere do we not? After learning the basics, be sure to read over our Texas Hold’em Strategy section and browse and ask questions in our forums to begin down the road to becoming a solid player. Finally, it is assumed that the reader knows the basic terms and definitions used in poker. If not, you can always check our terms pokerss glossary for clarification.

The Dealer Chip

The dealer chip moves clockwise around the table after each hand, and is a very important part of the game because it signifies your position. Since Texas Hold’em is a “fixed postion” game, you will want to always pay attention to who is “on the button,” as it is often referred to. At the very beginning of a game or tournament, to determine who gets the privelege of being “on the button” first, the most common method is to deal everyone a card, with the highest ranking card being the dealer.

The Small Blind and Big Blind

Rather than use antes to get the action started in Texas Hold’em, we use what are called “the blinds.” These are placed into the pot before any cards are dealt, thus they are “blind bets,” putting money into the pot without knowing what will be dealt. Before the cards are dealt, the person to the immediate left of the dealer puts in the small blind. The small blind is generally equal to half of the big blind. The player immediately to the left of the small blind is required to put in the big blind. The big blind is generally equal to the small bet of the limit being played. For example if you were playing / limit hold’em, the big blind would be and the small blind .
I should point out that blind amounts are completely arbitrary. Some games even feature blinds and antes, or only one blind. When organizing your home game realize that the more money in the pot before cards are dealt, the more hotly contested each pot will be. David Sklansky, a popular and revered poker author notes that poker begins as a battle for the blinds and antes. Obviously then, the smaller the blinds, the less there is to battle for.

Chronicles Of An Online Poker Player – Part Four

Chronicles Of An Online Poker Player – Part Four

Author: J. Scott Miller

“Playing Limit or No-Limit”

Okay, so what will it be, limit poker, or no-limit poker? You better know the difference before you begin playing. By saying this, I mean by the types of players who play in these rooms. I will either choose 25/50 cent no-limit or / limit.

I have said in the past that I will sometimes buy in for in a 10/20 cent no-limit room. But doing so without having a bankroll to continue on, should you lose an all-in bet, says you’re only in it for the short term. That will say a lot about you and the way you play. I will constantly see people buy in for , go all-in, but no one will call. Then that same person goes all-in again, and no one calls. But it will happen. Someone will eventually call him and he will lose. “Bloop!” There is another buy in from that player. He continues on until he has had enough and will disappear.

Please, don’t get this person confused with the “Bully” that I spoke about in my first article. This guy is simply in it for the short term, as am I when I buy in for only . Even though would be the maximum I can buy in for, you should have money backed up in your account to “reload” just in case.

This brings up another issue. Good online players will keep notes as to how people play. Believe it or not, this happens. That is what separates me from the good players …uh, you know what I mean.

Players in smaller limit rooms will definitely have more chasers, also known as “fish.” “Fish” are people who chase the deck for cards on 4th street and the river. But “fish” can be found anywhere. So if you are playing in a lower limit game, be careful how you play. By saying “lower limit,” this could be as much as / limit rooms. Be aggressive with the “fish” players so they will drop out of the hand. Even then it may not be enough and you will find you are on the wrong side of a river card flush. I hate people like me!

Now playing no-limit is for true “gamblers.” I don’t even mean card players in general, but simply a person who likes to gamble for the fun of it. This, of course, is really meant for the lower no-limit games. Once you buy in for , or even 0, you better make sure you are not in this “just for the fun of it.” There are plenty of players out there swimming through the internet poker rooms looking for the perfect catch. Don’t get reeled in by one of them.

Have you made your decision yet? You can read all of the different professional poker player’s books, there are plenty of them, (And I recommend it) but these are people who can tell you what cards you have by looking into your eyes. They can’t do this with play real money poker. If you feel like you may be overwhelmed, or under skilled as a player, stay low and learn by your mistakes. Once you have decided what you like most, stick with it. And like I said before, be aggressive. Stay on the gas peddle and go for broke.

Maybe that’s why I am broke? See you at the tables.
